What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of pure Essential oils, & Hydrosols steam distilled or cold pressed from aromatic plants to provide relief and care of both physical and emotional symptoms. The Naturally occurring chemical compounds in the essential oils, provide a range of therapeutic properties, most commonly received through inhalation, and topically via massage

Carrier Oils & Application

Combining the essential oils with carrier oils & infused carrier oils provide a way to safely apply essential oils topically. Herbally infused oils can do wonders on their own, and make great addition to Aromatherapy topicals. Consider Calendula, Comfrey leaf, or Arnica Montana to name a few.

While Aromatherapy is not regulated and licensed in the United States, The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, does a great job to provide reliable education, training & resources.

Educate yourself!

In the past 5 years or so I noticed more and more companies using this term, simply because their product smells like, let’s say Lavender, for instance. Aromatherapy, has to be the proper use of 100% pure essential oils and with Lavender there are several kinds. Depending on the type of Lavender oil used, and the ratio to other carrier ingredients, the product may have no therapeutic properties at all!

Without knowing what essential oil the company used, and that is was from a reliable source of 100% pure properly distilled essential oils, you cannot be sure if that product is actually an Aromatherapy product. Many companies, perfume companies for instance, start with trying to mimic the scent of an essential oil, such as Rose. However, because real rose oil (Rosa × damascena) is so expensive, they create a synthetic version that smells like “Rose”. This, has NO therapeutic benefits and is not Aromatherapy. Same goes for popular plant scents such as Sandalwood, and Myrrh and many others.
